Principles of Brentwood & Ongar Labour
In Brentwood & Ongar Labour, there are a wide range of differing perspectives and life experiences. These are the values which unite all of us in our party.
1.
Transparency
This means remaining in regular contact with local residents by having conversations, attending community events, and conducting surveys, promptly reporting on any issues raised.
2.
Fiscal responsibility
This means delivering high levels of value for money, in order to make funding from central government go as far as possible and keep council tax at low levels for local residents.
3.
Consumers’ rights
This means scrutinising the value that the private sector provides to consumers and challenging them when they fail to serve local residents, particularly when they profit from common goods such as water and transport.
4.
Fair employment
This means leading by example in the public sector by paying council workers a real living wage and protecting the right of local residents to trade union representation in the workplace.
5.
Environmentalism
This means recognising the climate emergency and monitoring our progress towards international obligations, helping local residents play their role by making recycling and electric charging more accessible.
6.
Locally-run business
This means protecting the future of our high streets and valuable assets by developing a long-term infrastructure plan and giving the community the chance to buy assets up for sale before the private sector.
7.
Aspiration
This means ensuring young people can stay in our community, through strict housing targets, high levels of social and affordable houses, and protections for genuine green belt land, parks, and wildlife trusts.
8.
Fighting discrimination
This means working with local venues and police on guidance and training for tackling violence against women, girls, and other groups that face discrimination, as well as increasing accessibility for disabled people.
