About Brentwood & Ongar Labour
Labour is a democratic, socialist political party. We represent all of its members with a postcode in the Brentwood & Ongar constituency.
Founded at the beginning of the 20th century, Labour was created in order to unite the political and trade unionist representatives of the working class. Since then, Labour have served in government for almost 40 years in total. Its achievements include the NHS, the modern welfare state, the creation of NATO, the Equal Pay Act, and the Equality Act.
In 2024, Labour returned to government for the first time in 14 years under the leadership of Keir Starmer. For the first time in history, over 90% of cabinet members attended state school. Trade unions remain pivotal to Labour, with the pledge to Make Work Pay putting new workers’ rights at the centre of its manifesto. Many of our members are also members of local trade union branches.
In the East of England, 27 out of 61 MPs are from the Labour Party – more than any other political party. While we do not have a Labour MP in Brentwood & Ongar, a record 23% of voters gave us their support. We have three councillors in Brentwood Borough Council, who have served in the Administration since 2023. This has allowed us to demonstrate our principles at a local level more than ever before.
